Rules for Box authors
Users are allowed to upload files to a ResearchBox that consist of supplementary content for publishable research. The following are accepted as publishable research: pre-prints, peer-reviewed publications, PhD dissertations, and academic blog posts. The following are not accepted as publishable research: any content generated for the exclusive purpose of satisfying a course or degree requirement (e.g., a term paper, a homework, a master thesis) . More generally, any content which is not directly related to research that will be widely available to the public is not accepted at ResearchBox. Paywalled journals and databases are considered widely available.
Users can edit and delete any files they have uploaded until they make the containing Box public, at that point ResearchBox will only delete content found to be illegal, or otherwise inappropriate (e.g., not related to research, disclosing participants private information, etc) . Errors, of any kind, are not sufficient justification for deleting files made permanent on a Box. The final decision in terms of deleting public files is made by the ResearchBox staff, not the researchers.
Content made public is to be considered permanent; anybody will be able to find the content through our own and 3rd party search engines. ResearchBox will not reverse authors' decision to make a box public, even when it was made public in error.
ResearchBox algorithms and staff actively monitor all uploaded content. Uploading inappropriate (i.e., non-research related) or illegal content (e.g., copyrighted materials) may lead to blocking the users and preventing them from accessing the website. It may also result in unilaterally deleting the files from our servers.
ResearchBox may keep copies of files even after they are deleted by authors.
ResearchBox facilitates the anonymous sharing of files while boxes are not yet public, and it does not actively help third parties (e.g., search engines) find private files, but it does not guarantee that a file uploaded to ResearchBox and categorized as private will not be viewable by third parties. Anybody with a link that includes a reviewer passcode has access to the files; for example, reviewers at a journal could share the link they received for conducting their peer review with third parties. ResearchBox does not actively prevent that. Authors, however, may change the passcode, effectively removing access to those with the link, at any point.
Any action by a user that seeks to bypass a ResearchBox restriction, e.g., renaming a file to hide the nature of the file will be considered abuse and may lead users to be permanently blocked.
ResearchBox may share private files with third parties, e.g., co-authors, advisors, ethics committees, etc., in cases where academic misconduct or illegal behavior is suspected. Private files will not be shared with third parties, including meta-researchers, for any other reason.
